Priest, chairman of the Department of Mathematics, served as president of the Arkansas Council of Tcachers of Mathematics during 1978-79. Dr. Bill Oldham served as vice president of the Arkansas Council and edited the Journal of the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Drs. Priest and Oldham were co-directors of the Arkansas Metric Education grant funded by the U.S. Office of Education. In September, they attended the National Metric Conference in Providence , Rhode Island. They also taught classes on "Mathematics Topics for Middle School Teachers" for the University of Arkansas on a National Science Foundation grant. Dr. Harmon Brown was regional director of the stafewide Arkansas Council contest in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Members of the department were also active in presenting papers at regional and national meetings. Dr. Steve Smith presented a paper on "Miscellanea in the Classroom" at the national meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in San Diego, and Dr. Priest's paper on "Solutions of Inequality by Wiggle Graphs" was read at the NCTM Name-of-Site meetings in San Antonio and WinstonSalem. Dr. Oldham presented a paper on "Metric Progress in Arkansas" at the Metric Conference in Biloxi. Five 1978 graduates took the professional acturial examination and passed on the first try. Chosen by the mathematics faculty as the most outstanding student in the department, Timothy Byron Baird received the Charles Grey Pitner Mathematics Award at the 1978 May Commencement. The new major in Computer Applications attracted a number of students. World's Largest Pizza nets $3,300 for music fund 'On April 1, 1978, members of the A Tempo Music Club, with the assistance of the Chi Sigma Alpha social club and Pizza Hut West, constructed in the New Athletic Center the world's largest pizza. Measuring 92 feet , 8 inches across, the pizza covered an area of 6,767.6 square feet, weighed approximately 4 tons, and c.entained 1,100 pieces. According to Dr. Clifton Ganus Ill , sponsor of A Tempo, the project netted the Department of Music about $3,300 which was used to purchase a harpSichord for the Recording Studio, a piano for the American Heritage Auditorium and a gong for the band. Ann Sewell served as vice president of the College Division of the Arkansas State Music Teachers Association. In the summer of 1978, Dr. William W. Hollaway published a new choral composition, "Rejoice." Dr. Erie T. Moore , chairman of the department, and Dr. Ken Davis, director of the A Cappella Chorus, attended the National Association of Teachers of Singing convention in Kansas City. Dr. Ganus, accompanied by eight students studying choral conducting, attended the Southeastern American Choral Directors ASSOCiation convention in Atlanta. Stephen and Martha Campbell wer~ added to the music faculty this fall as associate instructors. The Campbells served as graduate assistants in 1977-78 In December, members of the A Cappella Chorus performed in Verdi's "Aida" with the Memphis Opera. Both the A Cappella Chorus and the Chorale participated in the Christian College Choral Festival hosted by David Lipscomb College in January. The Harding Marching Band , under the direction of Dr. George E. Baggett, gave halftime performances at all home football games. The orchestra, directed by Travis Cox, gave three concerts during the year.
