([(~([lCcil~!1iJDll~~ ~ briefs and profiles (contlnued) Muncy receives national honor for book on historic Searcy For his book, Searcy, Arkansas: A Frontier Town Grows Up in America, Dr. Raymond Muncy, Chairman of the Department of History and Social Science , received the national award from the American Association for State and Local History . Dr. Muncy also reviewed books for the Journal of American History and the Journal of Mississippi History and a chapter on the Shakers for a sociology textbook to be published by Knox College. Serving as secretarytreasurer for the Arkansas Association of College History Teachers, Dr. Muncy attended the first annual convention of prelaw advisors held in San Antonio in October. Virgil Lawyer served as a member of the North Central evaluation team for Batesville High School and directed tours of the Shiloh and Vicksburg battlefields in his course on the Civil War. Mr. Lawyer sponsored the Young Republicans on campus as well . All members of the department were active in the state organizations for their discipline. Students participate in state organizations Accompanied by senior home economics major Melinda Meadows , Dr. Mildred Bell, Sharen Crockett and Elizabeth Wilson of the Home Economics Department attended the national meeting of the American Home Economics Association in New Orleans. Mrs . Crockett served as state sponsor of the Arkansas Student Home Economics Association in 1978. For 1979, Jamie Baites served as secretary and Paula litland served on the Nominating Committee. Mrs. Crockett also served on the state board for the Arkansas Association on Children Under Six. A recent dietetics major , Brenda Talley Dunn, was selected as the outstanding young dietitian of the state of Arkansas for 1978. Additions to library increase utilization of services Two major additions were made by the library during the summer of 1978. The first was the Microbook Library of American Civilization, a microform library of about 19,000 volumes covering all aspects of American life and literature up tn World War I. Many of the books in this collection are rare or out of print. Also, a Spartan 3M TattleTape Book Detection System was installed. This was expected to reduce book losses by about 90 per cent. In addition, a Minolta Coingraphic 201 Copier and a Dukane 27A25 Microfilm Reader were installed. The library received a $3,900 Title II-A grant for books. The librarians made reference services available for 78 of the 86 hours per week thai the library is open. During September, student population in the library from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. increased about 29 per cent over that of September, . 1977. Du;ing 1977-78. the librarians taught 106 classes with 55 of them being for students in English 103, emphasizing the writing of term papers; students checked out 67 ,'2,,79 books for an average of 24 .7 books per student; faculty members checked out 3,370 books for an average of 25.9, books per member ; and 6 ,851 volumes were added to the collection , bringi'1.g the total col - lection of 173,921 volumes, exclusive of the Library of American Civilization. Winnie Bell, head librarian, attended the annual meeting of the American library Association in Chicago and meetings of the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council in Dallas.
