Optimists Sponsor Soccer Team In the past, independent sports teams involving Harding students have done exceedingly well. Both a women's basketball team three years ago, and a current ice hockey team have excelled in their involvement. This year was no exception with the Searcy soccer team. Composed of Harding students, but sponsored by the Searcy Optimists, the international sport of "fotball" - known to Americans as soccer - was introduced. A member of the Arkansas Amateur League, the Searcy Optimist team competed with collegiate and Air Force teams. All of the Searcy team members held several years of soccer experience, with most of the members coming from the South Carolina and Georgia areas where soccer is most popular. Another asset to the team was several European members who were exchange students at Harding. Providing that native "know-how", they assisted with the coaching of the team . With practices on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, the team concentrated on ball control, foot techniques , dribbling, passing and shooting. The team competed in games on Saturdays and Sundays in Searcy and around the Little Rock area. With so many sports for fans to choose from, most fans pick one they're familiar with, so the support for this year's team was limited to those who had seen it before. Goalie Bill Arquitt commented that he hoped more students would support the team next year, as students would be more familiar with the sport. 166 ~ Soccer 1. wn.'-l SKILL AND MIGHT, John Moore implements a kick. 2.
