- ~v., The Harding Water Buffaloes did not wait around about starting their prac* tice, beginning by mid-September. Playing water polo by October, regular workouts began consisting of swimming 3,000·5,000 yards each day. Dual meets were held throughout the winter, but the last meet, the AIC meet, was certainly the most important. Carl Waites , a sophomore from Dear· born, Michigan, was on the swim team for his second year this year. Waites commented that psyching up is a big part of preparing for a meet. "I just concentrate on what I'm ganna be swimming. You think about it hard. You think about what you're gonna do." As a result, times are often improved two to three seconds from practices. " It makes a really big difference in swimmmg ." This year's team was young and inexperienced, with only six members hav· ing swum competitively before. As on any team, there was also the constant striving to remain unified. Waites was very optimistic though and said there will be a big improvement in next year's team. Swimming provides Carl Waites with opportunity to improve himself both physically and socially. "It keeps me in shape. It's a chance to get together with people you like." 156.
