It's my favorite sport and is the only one I've been involved with whole-heartedly," stated sophomore Mike Moody, a member of the Bison baseball team. Moody has been alternate catcher for two years for the Bisons and returned as catcher for the '79 season. Having played the position throughout his baseball career, he has no desire to play another position. "Once you're able to play collegiate baseball, it's all mental. The trick for a good average is your batting and defense. But you must first get into the proper mind, which is just as valuable as being in good playing shape." Mike recalled his feelings when batting: "My heart races while I'm at the plate, and my hands sweat from the pressure of wanting a hit. The whole time I'm at bat I say over and over to myself, 'I'm gonna get a base hit, I'm gonna get a base hit.' U As would be expected, an even more emotional strain for Mike was when he had to sit on the bench during game action: "It really gets frustrating sometimes just sitting there. You want to prove yourself to the team, but can't. The most important thing, though, is to have a good attitude and support the team, even if you are sitting on the bench." Looking back on the 1978 season, Moody cited the major cause for Harding's lack of success in baseball as being the limited facilities with which the team had to work. "Last year was the first year we were able to work in the New Gym, and that was only after the basketball team had finished their practice. We started gung ho to have a great season and then started losing. We always had a certain amount of hope, though." Being on the baseball team did not af· fect the way other students reacted to Mike. "Everyone accepts you just like you are and that's the way it's supposed to be." 142 ~ Baseball , ', r; ... .-;-'___ '"'I! k~~i~ "'". - t ,.; _'. • _ ~~ ~ ~_ w~~:,..:, ~ .. ~.
