Self-control is 1he name of the game; making one's body and mind work in harmony to their full potential. It takes dedication to excel in sports, and Tim Flatt knows just how much it does take. A sophomore marketing major from Memphis, Tim has been a dedicated athlete most of his life. At Harding that dedication has placed Tim as a starter in two varsity sports: track and basketball. While the seasons of the two sports do not actually overlap , their training seasons do, causing Tim some problem in trying to excel in each. The type of practice, participation and thinking involved in the two sports is totally different. "You'd think that after basketball you'd be in shape," states Tim, "but I sti ll have to train hard to get into shape for track. You use different muscles in basketball than you use in track." Where in basketball participants run short distances with quick spurts, in track the distances are longer with a continuity in speed. Participating in two sports also presents two different sets of motivational factors. For Tim , "Track is a more individualized sport with individual accomplishments. It's just you, yourself, if you win in track, where in basketball the whole group wins together and the individual accomplishment isn't there." One's whole orientation is changed from a team concept in basketball to an individual concept of competition in track. Even groups of friends change in orientation. "From one sport to the next I change over from one group of guys to the next group," comments Tim. During track 1 hang around with track guys, and during basketball 1 hang around with the basketball guys. But. I have friends in both sports." 134 ~ Track season rounclup 1978 AIC/NAIA DISTRICT 17 TRACK AND FIELD RESULTS Ouachita Baptist University 60 Henderson State University 56 Arkansas Tech 46 Harding College 44 University of Central Arkansas 36 Univ. of Arkansas-Monticello 32 Hendrix College 6 Southern Arkansas University 1
