Wildcats are conference 6A co-chomps; first time ever The Harding Academy Wildcats of 1977-78 showed many peop le around the state that they can pl ay basketball too. The Sen ior roundball ers rolled up an impressive 14-6 season performance as well as a 9-3 District 6-A record. This total allowed the Wildcats to be co-champions of their conference. The 'Cats combined a strong inside game with some quickness outside to dominate many opponents. In the games he was able to start, Roy Barnes averaged twelve poin ts and five rebounds per game. Jimmy Allen led the · Wildcats in reboundin g, gathering nine caroms a game, and also added eleven poi nts a game. David Wright was second in rebounding, averaging eight, while he contributed twelve points a game to the 4 'Cats scoring . Allen and Wright were honored by being named to the AIIDistri ct team. In his first year as head coach , James Di ckey was a big success. He gained the respect of opposi ng coaches and most importantly, his players. He not only concentrated on individual improvement, but stressed a team concept which led the 'Cats to thei r finest record in many years.
