JO~N EFFORTS Economic education The American Studies Program existed to train students for leadersh ip careers in business, publ ic li fe and education . Part icipants in t he program learned through formal training observat ion tours , spec ial seminars wi th staff members of the coll ege as well as with leaders of industry, business, education and government. New Orl eans was the sett ing for the group's fa ll observat ion tours . By touring var ious businesses in the area, the students were given an opportunity to observe t he complex mechanics of enterpri se w ithin a free soc iety . Tours were only a part of the exposure students were given to the rea lm of the American way, as many well known speakers were invited to come to share thei r v iews with the st udent s. Speakers included U.S. Congressman Sam Ervin; Professor of South Carolina University, Dr. Richard Walker; Chairman of the Eaton Corporation, E. Mandell de Windt ; and also Senator Strom Thurmond. Pa rti c ipat in g in the Southwest Students in Free Ente rpr ise In - tercollegiate Competition in Dall as in Apr il , 1977, the Economics Team won first place among co ll eges and universities from a five-state area . The 1977 team developed the theme, "Free Enterpri se: Let's Reinvent the Wheel." As th is book went to press, the 1978 team was making preparations to defend its t itl e in Dall as, using the theme, "F ree Enterprise : Let's Keep It in Busi ness." The team completed 80 234 • American Studies pro jects during the 1977-78 school year. The major project was an extens ive study for the Searcy Chamber of Commerce entitled , "Locat ing in Searcy, Arkansas: Facts for Busi ness and Industry." The team also prepared a radio tape for the Voice of Amer ica on " Thi s Is Economics." Chapel programs were presented on campus and short economics messages were
