Dr. Mason retires, completes 30 years as Superintendent PERRY S. MASON, M.A., LL.D., completed his tenure as Superintendent of Harding Academy after occupying the position for 30 years . Appointed by Dr. George S. Benson , Dr. Mason saw the Academy's student body double in size and change from 80 percent dormitory students to over 80 percent town students. When Dr. Mason began as Principal in September of 1946, the Academy had only two salaried teachers - Dr. Mason and Mrs. Inez Pickens. The 180 students meeting in two Godden Hall classrooms sat through classes on chairs made from apple crates. Realizing that the school lacked extracurricular activities, Dr. Mason installed a traveling chorus and an athletic program. Dr. Mason recently approved plans for a one million dollar-I ,254,000 square foot structure to house the Academy in the future . In retirement Dr . Mason plans to author an American history textbook stressing the free enterprise system's role in the United States' development. BILL DILES, M.A., high school Principal for nine years, oversaw all academic and extracircular functions at the Academy. On the recommendation of a North Central evaluation committee, Mr. Diles attended Harding College and the University of Central Arkansas in the summer of 1975, taking advanced courses in school administration and certifying to teach driver education courses. Mr. Diles also gave play-by-play commentaries and kept sta tistics at football games. DALE G. GOULD, M.A.T. , began his first year as Registrar in the plac.e of Mr~ J. E. Berryhill , who retired in 1975. Previously, Mr. Gould held various positions at the Academy, including science instructor, history instructor, and Principal. As Registrar Mr. Gould worked with students in planning their courses of study and facilitated enrollment procedures through an early registration program. 1. DR. PERRY S. MASON, Superintendent. 2.
