Harding 18 Southwestern College 0 The Bisons opened their football season with a shut out over the Moundbuilders from Southwestern College, Kansas. Defense was the dominant aspect of Harding's play. The defensive unit allowed only 102 total offensive yards by the Southwestern team and intercepted four passes, one for a score. Terry Brumley, junior defensive back, scored first for the Bulls on a 39-yard interception return. /-larding's second score came in the second quarter on a 21 -yard run by freshman tom Ed Gooden. Ronnie Peacock, the Bisons fine split end, scored the final touchdown on an eight-yard pass from qbarterback Terry Welch. IPeacock ended the game with eight receptions for III yards. Co-captain Charles Caffey led all players in rushing with a 4.5 yards per carry average on 15 attempts. Harding '3 Millsaps 12 The Bisons put together fine teamwork and an exciting game-winning touchdown in the final seconds to win their second game of the season. A Terry Welch-toCharles Caffey pass with 36 seconds left in the game gave the Bulls a 13-12 victory over Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. The game left Harding with a 180 2-0 record. Harding scored first in the second quarter when quarterback Tommy Lewey threw to Ronnie Peacock for a four-yard touchdown. Tn the third quarter the defensive unit held the Majors inside the Harding two-yard line for three plays in succession without allowing a score. With 3:30 remaining in the game, Welch engineered the final winning touchdown drive of 52 yards. Welch completed ten passes for 93 yards, whi le Lewey connected on nine for 90 yards. Peacock grabbed nine passes for 79 yards. Harding , 4 Southern State 25 Tn Harding's ATC conference opener, Southern State. with a freshman substitute quarterback at the helm, stopped the Bisons 25-14 at Magnolia. Scoring first was Harding on a one-yard run by Tommy Lewey in the first period. Halfback Tom Ed Gooden scored on a two-point play after the touchdown. The Muleriders scored two touchdowns in the first half to take a 15-8 lead at the half. Tn the second half they added another touchdown and a field goal. With a minute remaining in the game, Ronnie Peacock caught a touchdown pass from Lewey in the far corner of the end zone.
