CROSS COUNTRY TEAM. FRONT ROW: David Embry, Rick Johnson, Jim Kaufman, Johlj Ratliff, Bill Slicer, Brad DOPDs. SECOND ROW: Coaches Jim Crawford, Virgile lawyer, Gordon Scoles. CROSS-COUNTRY Bisons fall to Arkansas Tech In cross country competition Tim Geary, a freshman from Merced, California, in his first season outdoors, clocked 24:37 and John Ratliff, a junior transfer from York College, posted a 25:00 in the ArC Cross Country meet at Conway to take second and third, respectively, in the 4.9 mile championship run. However, the young squad was unable to continue the string of crowns, falling to an improved Arkansas Tech team. Only one returning letterman was listed among the inexperienced crew of Bison harriers. Others who ran in the conference meet were Bill Slicer who placed 17th, Rick Johnson who finished 24th, Brad Dopps who was 28th, David Embry finishing 35th and Jim Kaufman 38th, Rising interest in the grueling sport by other schools in the ArC has improved competition in the conference and commanded more respect from Harding's cross country team. Jim Crawford, who set many of the state's cross country records while a student at Harding, served as assistant coach for the Bisons. Commented Crawford, "The boys did exceptionally well considering the fact that practically none of the boys had ever run in competi tion in high schoo!." 246 COMPETITION between teammates John Ratliff and Tim Geary helps them place high in the AIC Cross Country meet at Hendrix. •
