Bisons take fourth straight cross-country crown To the I farding cross-country team , 1966 brought the cha llenge of matching the reco rds of three straight ATC champion ship teams. Preparation bega n ea rl y as the athletes spent th e summer foll owing rigorous indi vidual workouts. In September more intens ive work began under Coach Virgil Lawye r and stud en t ass istant Cliff Clark. Early losses proved that cross-country had improved in th e AlC and that Hardin g could not w in simply on (I'ad ition. The Bisons sensed the cha llenge and responded like cham pi ons. The harri ers toughened up the ir already long and grueling workouts and ga in ed needed exper ience through a tough non -conference sc hedule. Then came the AlC meet and the payoff. Jim Crawford's second place fini sh led the way to championship number four. Harding took six pla ces out of the first ten to top second-place H enderson 25-91. In th e TAlA mee t, th e Bi sons, again led by Crawford, ran to a seventeenth place ranking among 200 plus teams that compete in NATA cross-country. The Bisons look to 1967 and AlC cross-country trophy number fi ve with the l oss of only two sen iors, Bill Stokes and Phil Griffin, 210
