A critical moment; the confidence Coach Groover imparts at times like this is what wins games. 155 Dedication For his devotion to the Academy, his willingness to cooperate in all our activities, his untiring efforts to instill within us the principles of Christianity, the spirit of fair play, and the Christlike humility which he possesses, we, the graduating class of 1956, respectfully dedicate our portion ofthe Petit Jean to our coach, HUGH GROOVER. Hugh Groover was born in Columbus, Ohio, on October 9, 192'8, and attended public school in Magnetic Springs, Ohio. Upon his graduation from high school in 1946, he entered Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, but after one year he transferred to Harding College where he majored in physical education and history. While a student here, Hugh was very active in sports and won ' the Sportsman Trophy in 1948. He was a member of the Trojan Club and the Physical Education Club. In March of his senior year, Hugh married his college sweetheart, Mildred Horne. Following his graduation from Harding in 1950, Hugh was girl's basketball coach for one year at Searcy High. Since moving into Harding Academy's athletic program as head coach in 1952, Hugh has continuously displayed his unexhaustable patience and love in guiding us to an ever higher plane of living. Hugh and Mildred at home with their girls, Penny and Dena, Hugh's all-American prospects.
