1954-1955 Yearbook

Sports Directors: Hugh Rhodes. Cecil Beck, and "Pinky" Berryhill. The intramural program at Harding this year saw greater interest than ever before, with approximately 250 students participating. The success of this program may be attributed largely to the work of its directors, Cecil Beck and "Pinky" Berryhill, with occasional help from Hugh Rhodes. Continuing the system that was started last year, points were given to students for each sport played, plus additional points for making the AllStar Team or being on the winning team. At the end of the year, trophies are given to the students having the most points. This helps greatly to increase the interest in intramural sports. There are various other sports which are not played on an intramural.basis, but are nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed by all-such as swimming, golf, and track. These sports help the students at Harding to develop both physically and emotionally. Juniors Win Class Softball Championship Due to the limit on time in the fall, only one sport can be played on an intramural basis; thus football and softball must be alternated. This year it was football's turn, but an enthusiastic group turned out for the class tournament in softball. The Faculty, having lost their speedy pitcher Bob Meyers, failed in their efforts to win their Sanderson of the Graduates waits for the pitch in a thriller with the Juniors. third consecutive class championship. To everyone's surprise, the Juniors walked off with the laurels. They stomped the Seniors in their first game and then nosed out the Sophomores for the championship. The Juniors were led by such stars as Carol Eades, Pete Ward, Jim Smith., Benny Sanders, and Doyle Border. Class Champions, The Juniors - ROW ONE: James Hearn, Carroll Eades. Jim Smith, Doyle Border. ROW TWO; Martel Pace, Pete Ward, Lindell Housley, Joe Burrows, Toady Bedford, Don Underwood.
