Betty ·f-lelm Crowned '54 Pe.t:it: Jean Quee'n" The highlight of the yearbook d.edi– cation ce:remony held yesterday after– noon at- 5 o'clock in the large audi– torium came when Student Associa– tion President Norman Hughes, crowned Betty Helm 1954 Petit Jean Queen. Contrary to past Pl'ocdure, the finalists entered frotn off stage. The men were dl·essed in dark suits and the women in pastel fortnals, creating a col01tul background for the climax of the program, the revealing ·of the ctueen's identity. The backg1·ound of the throne was accented with the cover color, revealed as black .and white with grey overtones. Miss ffelm, nominee of the Sigma Tau Sigma club, carried an arm bouquet of a d.o:~~en red roses. She is a junior £rom Wenatchee, Wash., a member of the Trl-Kappa ~cial cl11b and is majoring in elementary education. Attendants to the queen, Wry– ing arm bouquets of yellow carna1:ions were Jerry Chesshir, nomin.ee of the Delta Iota Club, and Mary Ann Tonkery, Alpha Phi Kappa can– didat~. Miss Chesshir is a junior from Nashville, and Miss Tonk,e:ry ·a senior from Fairmont, W. Va. Dedication of the '54. P.J., an– nounced by editor Shirley ,Bh'dsall anddetermined by a vote of the sen– ior class, was made to M. E. "Pinky" Berryhill, J?rofessor of physical edu– cation. Honors of best all around stu– dents went to seniors Grace Mc– Reynolds, DeRidder, La., and Bob Gilliam, Fort Worth, Tex. Other features included the final– ists for class favorites. Senior class favorites were Shirley Birdsall, New Orleans, La., and Norman Hughes, Crestview, Fla. The Junior class chose Jane Sutherlin, Searcy, and Bob Nossaman, Isabel, Kans. Barbara Johnson, Campbell, Mo., and Winfred Wright, Greenway, were chosen favorites by their sophomore classmates. Represent– ing the freshman class were nomi– nees Claudette Harris, Hoxie, and Dick Richardson, Caruthersville, Mo. Louise Shults, Williford, and James Zink, Tulsa, Okla., were the ones recognized as college honor students, having completed the first semester with perfect averages. Academy students taking part in the program included feature final– ists and four honor students. Gail Shoptaw, Fayetteville. and Bunny Norris, Gerald Casey, and Harold Vanderpool of Searcy were those rated honor students. Voted best all around were Peggy Robert– son, North Little Rock, and Freddy Massey, Pontiac, Miss. Dot Good– win, Vicksburg, Miss., and Roy Vanderpool, Searcy, received the school favorite vote. Cutest students were Faye Berry Kansas City, Kans. and Garrett Timmerman, Searcy. Those con– sidered wittiest among Academy students were Dorothy McGinnis, Kaiser, and Alan Highers, Ft. Smith. Following the dedication progtam, the 1954 Petit Jeans were distrib– uted to students and college per– sonnel at various places on the
