Dr. James Carr. director of the summer sessions. was master of ceremonies for the program. which included a selection of pa trio! ic songs presented by the Harding summer session band under the direction of Dr. Clifton (;anus III. assistant professor of music. Don Shores. news director for K\\TK radio station and a l~li.J !larding alumnus. read selections from the "Preamble to the Constitution." the "Declaration of Independence" and the "Pledge of Allegiance." Jack l\lcKinney. assistant professor of Bible and biblical languages who has spent the greater part of the last 20 years outside of the L'nited States in the mission field. was featured speaker. His talk centered around the less sung and less frequently read verses of the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "Ameri~. the Beautiful" and · their relevance to todayS America. Sylvia Rose, senior music 1 major from Detroit, Michigan .. sang the "Battle Hymn o·f the; _ Hepublic" for the program's finale. According to Dr. Carr, a similar celebration is planned for the nation's Bicentennial next :July.
