LIBRARY OF HARDING UNIVERSITY OPERATING OUTSIDE THE BUILDING FOR FIFTEEN MONTHS In 1988 the librarians decided that it was time for another expansion, which would be the fourth expansion for the library building. Both student enrollment and library collection had increased. We needed more room for both. Dr. Burks, President, agreed with us and so began the process. In thinking of all possibilities the librarians thought it best to bring in a library consultant and after investigation it was decided that Dr. David Kaser would be that consultant. Once Dr. Burks was convinced it would be a good move, Dr. Kaser was invited to come and give us his opinion of the expansion. He did a thorough job and told us the only choices would be to build an entirely new building or to gut the current building and renovate it into an acceptable space for current usage, and then to plan on an e.xpansion in ten years, and another in 20 years, to keep up with growth in students and library collection. By gutting the building many walls inside would be eliminated and the space for students and the collection would be increased by a large percentage. Horace Pizza was chosen to be the architect. Once the decision was made to proceed with the plan of gutting the building it became necessary to make arrangements to operate for fifteen months outside the building. Alternate
