• SUMMER1997 National College Honor Society for All Fiel~Box 2249 Harding University, Searcy, Arkansas 72149 AX celebrates 75th anniversary History volume completed Alpha Chi marked its 75th anniversary at the biennial national convention April 3-5 in Philadelphia. The celebration included the introduction of a 245-page history of the society. Acopy ofthebook, Scholarship and Char– acter: 75 Years ofAlphaChi, wasthecenter– piece of each table at the convention's open– ing banquet, and one person at each table claimed the book as a door prize. Also at the banquet the book's author, Dr. Robert W. Sledge, was presented a plaque of apprecia– tion by the National Council commemorat– ing the occasion. Sledge currently serves as the president of the Council andhas been active in AlphaChi leadership for more than 25 years. He is professor ofhistory at McMurry University, Abilene, Tex. Following the banquet, during the dessert mixer, Sledge autographed copies of the book. Scholarship andCharacter chronicles the society's growth from asmall group ofTexas colleges and universities to a national orga– nization with some 330 chapter~ and a total of more than 250,000 members inducted since 1922. Sledge incorporates the names of hun– dreds ofindividuals and institutions but also sets Alpha Chi's growth in the context of cultural history and trends in higher educa– tion. Each chapter ends with amore detailed article on an important personality or issue in the society's past. (See the excerpt on page/our.)
