ourkristen foundation helps families in need Junior Erin Selby mixes cookies for the Ju Go Ju-spon– sored bake sale Nov. 4-8. The bake sale benefited the Our Kristin Foundation. The foundation , which formed after former student Kristen Altman was killed in a car accident Jan. 16, 2002, helped families deal with the unexpected loss of a child. After Altman's death , her family faced funeral and burial costs. A friend of the family assisted by helping with the funeral arrangements and more friends helped financially. After being the recipient of such love and generosity, the Altman family wanted to build a foundation that would assist other families faced with the terrible loss of a child. "[The] Our Kristin Foundation not only helps families with the financial needs that the loss of a child causes, but also helps families with their emotional needs by giving them a support system of families that have been in similar situations," sophomore Dana Airman, Kristin's sister, said. On May 14, 2002, the Our Kristin Foundation held its first auction and benefit dinner. More than 500 people attended and the keynote speaker was Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People." Proceeds from the auction directly aided the foundation's mission of assisting families in need. During her time at Harding, Krisitn Altman was a member of Ju Go Ju social club. In an effort to remember their club sister, Ju Go Ju members planned several fund raising activi– ties to help the Our Kristin Foundation. One of these activities was a bake sale, which raised more than $700. The Altman family expressed gratitude for the support the student body gave to the Our Kristin Foundation. By loving and supporting families in grieving situations, the family hoped to capture the generosity and love of Kristin Altman.
