Students watched a number of television programs in the student center, ranging from news programs to football games. THIS YEAR'S TV SEASON HAD ______ I rea 1{y____ If you were in chapel on Friday mornings, you probably overheard someone talking about what happened the night before on CBS's popular reality TV show "Survivor." "Survivor" was the first of many realitybased shows that have found prime-time spots on television. An early ancestor of these shows was "The Real World" on MTV. The idea of the show was to put a group of strangers in a house together to see how they would get along. The ratings were so high that the show had multiple sequels. Other shows like ABC's "Making of the Band" followed specific people or groups of people as they went through some sort of contest or school. For instance, "Making of the Band" followed the boy band 0-Town from their humble beginnings to producing a successful album. And, of course, the biggest of the reality TV shows was "Survivor." The original show was filmed on an island in the South Pacific. Contestants had to survive every week of the show. ALL OVER THE SCREEN The draw was that someone was voted off the island every week until only one survivor remained. That sole survivor won the prize of $1 million. The show was such a success that there was a "Survivor 2" and "Survivor 3" scheduled. The setting for the second show was in the Australian outback. The third setting was in Africa. "I looked forward to seeing all the gross and just outright weird things that the people would do every week on 'Survivor'," said senior Chris Rich. Many students shared this view and even had "Survivor" parties on Thursday nights. However, some students just didn't get into the reality TV craze. Some avoided the shows because of moral issues in shows like Fox's "Temptation Island." "The basic idea behind shows like 'Temptation Island' is just morally wrong, and, in my opinion, shouldn't be something that is aired on TV," said sophomore Brad Whitlock. -Jerad Nunnally Jenni Sheren-Beebe, Ark.
