Just like sleeping and studying, fitness was a major part of campus life. Most students recognized the importance of fitness in their college career, but finding time for it was a challenge. "I like working out in the morning best because I feel fresh right when I get up," senior B.J. Bailey said. "My body isn't tired yet, like it is after a long day." For others, working out after school helped relieve some of the stress the day had caused. Senior Martha Kellum, who trains for marathons, preferred to work out in the afternoon. "After a rough day, running really helps to calm my nerves," Kellum said. "Stretching is a relief from a hectic schedule." Last year Kellum participated in eight races, including the Rocket City MaraTO BE A PRIORITY FOR STUDENTS thon in Huntsville, Ala. and the lOK Gum Tree Race in Tupelo, Miss. With the increasing emphasis on fitness, as well as the need for more classroom space, an addition was built on the southeast corner of the Ganus Athletic Center. Aside from new classrooms, offices and labs, the 13,000 square foot expansion offered a fitness center with four times the amount of space and equipment than the previous weight room. The new addition inspired many students and faculty members to begin or maintain a workout regime. "Fitness is a part of our university mission statement," said Dr. Wilt Martin, chairman of the kinesiology department. "When our faculty and students are physically fit, the better they produce physically and intellectually." - Tiffany Johnston Ryan Hunter-Sherwood, Ark. Sara Hurd-North Little Rock, Ark.
