Alpha Psi Omega

TRIO MUSIC ART DRAMA By MEREDITH THOM Recently, someone handed me a maga– zine and asked me how I liked a paint– ing on the bottom of page thirty-five. Now I don't consider myself an authori– ty and it was a rare case in that I did recognize the painting as being "The Rock" by Peter Blume. The painting covers twenty-nine square feet of canvas and tool< seven ·years to finish. Peter Blume is a middle aged American artist, noted for his startling scenes. This one symbolizes the continual process of man's rebuild– ing out of a devasted world. The shat– tered blood-red rock represents the world today, surrounded by symbols of destruction: skeletons, blasted trees, -bt11,ingZ1C'hris, :mel thl' crumbling : edifices of man. There is a note of hope in Blume's world where life blooms even in the. midst of, decay.. A, sca:~,~let fungus grows full-bloom out of a dead and rotten stump. Below and around the 1 I rock, people feverishly grovel in the ruins, building for themselves a new andl I better world represented by the soaring scaffolding at the left of the 'painting. Preliminary sketches took up Blue's first three years of work. This method results in extremely limited production, but the demand is tremendous. He sells everything he paints, at prices which compare favorably with those obtained by Picassio. "The Rock" was sold before it was publicly shown for the first time. There is now a small copy on display in the student center, take a look at it. By the applause and attendance, I would say that we enjoyed the Winter Band Concert. We should all get behind . this reborn organization since it fills a vacant spot in our activities. It may be that you have an interest in that direc- ' tion and if so you should work with this group along with those like Billy , Howell, Merle Garrett, and Ken Noland. : Patrice Munsel made Life's cover for I the second time. When she made her · Met debut at the age of eighteen her face appeared on Life and now at tvventy-six she appears again. It pays to notice the covers of various maga- , zines for a picture digest of the news. David Porter has just finished his pledgeship for Campus Players. He qualified by his active interest in dra– matic work, while a member of Dra- // inat1c Club;·mvid has been stage man– ager, member of stage crews and had several minor roles. Last year, he made his first appearance as a walk-on in the Music Departments production of "Trial By Jury." Last summer he was cast in "The Forgotten Man" and last fall you saw him in "A Night In The Country," both one act plays. Wanda Fanis is now an understudy for the Eta Omega Cast of Alpha Psi Omega, along with Benny Holland, Jack Plummer, Ruby Lee Ellis, and yours truly. "£· TRIO MUSIC ART DRAMA By ME.REDI'fH THOM "The voice of the turtle is heard in om land" and eager artists are packing their paint and brushes to get a closer look at the awakening of spring. You have missed an unusually pleasant time if you've never taken your paints out of the studio into the open spaces. Palette Club, take a hint. Ey the way, your sponsor Mrs. Mason, is now a mem– ber of Alpha Psi Omega. Congratula– tions. The speaker at a tempo's last lecture tea", held March 15, was Miss Eileen Snm·e. She spoke on the relationship of music to the theatre from a dramatist view point. Among those present was Don Gamer, a Harding graduate of '50, who is now working on his master's de– gree in theatre at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. You all know that the Glenn Ful– bright's have a TRIO of their own, now. Thursday, you saw Don Garner's one ' act play ''The Addict" and Friday, The Barter Theatre's presentation of "The Merchant of Venice'' by Shakespeare. There is a considerable difference in the two plays but here's hoping that you enjoyed both of them. Special credit goes to Ray Wright and Louise Zinser for their work with the music for "The Addict". It was a strong factor in the play and was well chosen. Ray was also stage manager for the one act. The Academy seniors hnve stal'ied working on their tlner~ act production, it will be "Our Miss D1·ooks" adapted from the original material of R J. l\Jann by Perry Clark. Someone like Miss Brooks has a part in eve1·yone's life. · She's a human and delightful English teacher, and whether she likes it or not, involved in almost everything that goes on at school. You've heard her on the radio played by Eve Arden and now you'll want to see her on the stage, play- •ed by Detta Morris. HONORABLE MENTION to .Mrs. Edith Halpert for her encouragement of new talent. On display now, in her gal– lery called "The Downtown" · in Man– hattan, are the 'Yorks of several new– comers. Katzman, Preusser, Meigs, and Reiss are among the new proteges.
