TRIO MUSIC ART DRAMA MEREDITH THOM fl - ..._ For the pa&t months,. :f{erb Dean and Professor Roberts. have been wQrking on a mural of Christian activities. It would be well worth your time to take a trip to the art department .and wat¢h the development of this painting. Befot"e long the Student Center .will be tn.e scene of another art exhibit. The stu4 dents' work of the past year will be shown, including a wide range of med– iums and a.: larger variety fields in art. Hope you've seen Life's exhibit of 1848 in the lib:rary. ~t Saturday evening, in the band room of the Music Building, a tempo met for a lecture. Professor Moore, head of the Music Department spok~ on Har– monic Theory of Heinrich Schenker. Those present were metnbers of a tempo and their guests. The smAll chorus gave t~e..fk!;l,t ,p~Of.Z:MU~~ ~~Jl~~~: J1~\Yc';,ag,tli~. . torium, · last week. Their perform~nce showed a very important feature of the new building. The acustics are good to the extent that a normal speaking voice can be heard at the rear of the auditor– ium without any trouble. Campus Players has selected this year's. group in Dramatic Club {'Or mem– bership into Campus Players. The names of the new pledges will be revealed at a later date. This group will have con-· siderable responsibility in the growth of dramatics, next year. Another year means Campus Players' Awards! The Best Actor, the Best Act– ress, the Best Director of a one-act play, and the Best Backstage Worker are the awards given by Campus Play– ers annually. These awards have been chosen, this year, by a committee of five. Those on the committee were Miss Holton, Eileen Snure, Sarah Copeland, David Porter, and yours truly. Sorry, I can't reveal the four "Best'' at this time. Last week we saw a good film called "Hidden Treasures" produced by the Moody Bible Institute. Everytime we see a film from Hollywood that has any– thing to do .with religion it's Catholic. You and I have seen other religious films put out by other religious and secular organizations. Films are one of the strongest teaching mediums avail– able, but are· we Christians using it? NO. Ever hear of teaching all nations or the use of talents? Of course there is a connection in the two passages, so what are we waiting for? Are we going to limit our teaching to a few methods that have been over used, are we going to disregard our talents while other groups use their's? Those of us with interests in art, music, and dramatics should be inter– ested in this medium and others should encourage this and other mediums of teaching. When people walk away from a movie, they believe what they see. Have you ever taught a Sunday School class and have one of the students re– late the story of Samson and Delilah, Cecil B. DeMile style? Why not produce the truth, giving chapter and verse? I would like to hear your remarks on this subject, I believe that we truly have a field "white unto Harvest". Meredith Thorn, Chosen· Meredith Thorn, sophomore from Rockford, IlL, was chosen Campus Players and Dramati~ Club president in a special elec– tion this week made necessary by the transfer of Cliff 'Seawel, form– er prexy. Also nomin a ted for the office were Bill WilHa m,.<> and Benny Holland. W illiams, who was vice· presiden t under Seawel, will con– tinue to :;ervc in that capacity. ~mmmmrnrctll''''''''',;;; ,,,, ,mnmmramm:nmwnnnonnrgdliO# TRIO MUSIC ART DRAMA By MEREDITH THOM . ~ -; W'""W'''Fili'''' ••ilmmmnn:•"'''!l!t =mmmnnurlrrmw••••Y''''''!Ihhmil#liJ1W Recently, someone handed me a maga– zine and asked me how I liked a paint– ing on the bottom of page thirty-five. Now I don't consider myself an authori– ty and it was a rare case in that I did recognize the painting as being "The Rock" by Peter Blume. The painting covers twenty-nine square feet of canvas and took seven years to finish. Peter Blume is a middle aged American artist, noted for his startling scenes. This one symbolizes the continual process of man's rebuild– ing out of a devasted world. The shat– tered blood-red rock represents the world today, surrounded by symbols of destruction: skeletons, blasted trees, burning: rlebris, nnrl the crumbling edifices of man. There is a note of hope in Blume's world where life blooms even · in the midsL•of dec~1y. A_ scarlet ' ' - ~ . ,, ' fungus grows 'full--.J:t]oorr{Oltt.. o£< a "de'ad , and ~·"ott'en stump: Below and arou:nd:the rock, people feverishly grovel in the ruins, building for themselves a new and better world represented by the soaring– scaffolding at the left of the painting. Preliminary sketches took up Blue's first three years of work. This method results in extremely limited production, but the demand is tYemendous. He sells everything he paints, at prices which compare favorably with those obtained by Picassio. "The Rock" was sold before it was publicly shown for the first time. There is now a small copy on display in the student center, take a look at it. By the applause and attendance, I would say that we enjoyed the Winter Band Concert. We should all get behind this reborn organization since it fills a vacant spot in our activities. It may be that you have an interest in that direc– tion and if so you should work with this group along with those like Billy Howell, Merle Garrett, and Ken Noland. Patrice l\'Iunsel made Life's cover for the second time. When she made her l\Iet debut at the age of eighteen her face appeared on Life and now at twenty-six she appears again. It pays to notice the covers of various maga– zines fot· a picture' digest of the news. David Porter has just finished his pledgeship for Campus Players. He qualified by his active inte1:est in dra– matic work, while a member of Dra– matic Club. David has been stage man– ager, member of stage crews and had several minor roles. Last year, he made his first appearance as a walk-on in the Music Departments production of "Trial By Jury." Last summer he was cast in "The Forgotten Man" and last fall you saw him in "A Night In The Country," both one act plays. Wanda Fan-is is now an understudy for the Eta Omega Cast of Alpha Psi Omega, along with Benny Holland, Jack Plummer, Ruby Lee Ellis, and yours truly. Since Alpha Psi is a national fraternity it is a great honor to be con– sidered for membership. If you work in dramatics you should work toward Alpha Psi because it is within reach and it will mean something to you in the years to come. There is a place for dra– matics in your life.
